Have you visited your local Family History Center?Or, used the LDS site http://www.familysearch.orghttp://www.familysearch.org -- the bigFamily History Library in Salt Lake City has their catalog online at the FamilySearch site.
The LDS have crews out microfilming records all over the world, and if they filmed the land records in any county where you are researching you can order out those films to your local FHC, for a nominal fee.You want to order the index first, see if your family is even listed, not everyone owned land.If they do not own land, then check out tax records, a man might own a mule to plow his rented land and will be taxed a poll tax for that mule, or horse.
Any records with et ux, means "and wife."When a man buys the land, only his name will be on the record, but if he buys land after he marries, then when he sells that land his wife will also be listed.
On most records only the first person named will be listed in the index. So, if all the heirs sign off when final sale of land is made, it will list the first person, then et al.That means "and others" and should always catch your eye.It is helpful if you know the names of the sons-in-laws, as they might be the first one named.Or, in the case of my Yates line, the daughter was named, then her husband, get used to the idea women didn't count for much in the old days -- they skipped her name and her husband was listed in the index.
I suggest you find and visit a FHC, look for a local genealogy society. One of them may offer classes for beginners.Believe me they are worth the time spent, and can keep you from spinnig your wheels. Also, once you meet other local researchers they can give you hints of what is available locally and where to find "stuff."Research is an on going lesson, you often will learn from others who research locally where you live.
Have you used the GenWeb sites? If not, let me know I'll give you some hints for those.
Happy Hunting (^_^)
