As you follow the Terrys through census records, you can see the family connections, except the Renick family. Renick has liquor store, J.S. is a grocer, and it's probably just a business connection. 1900 census Howard St., Dallas, Dallas Co, TX: Terry, James S., h, b May 1834, 66, m 23 yrs, b SC, SC, SC " Callie, w, b Jun 1855, 44, m 23 yrs, 9 ch, 8 lvg, b MS, SC, SC " Hugh F.,s, b Apr 1878, 22, sgl -Physician - b MS " Ruth, d, b Oct 1879, 20, b TX " roy, s, b Apr 1882, 18, b MS " Grover C., s, b Oct 1884, 15, b TX " P___ L., s, b Jun 1887, 12, b TX " Bob Lee, s, b Jun 1890, 9, b TX " Katy bell, d, b Nov 1891, 8, b TX " Lucy H., d, b Jan 1895, 5, b TX Same county: Terry, Charles M., h, b May 1837, 63, m 26 yrs, b SC, SC,SC " Caroline, w, b Feb 1851, 49, m 26 yrs, 6 ch, 1 lvg, b LA, GA, GA " Augusta, d, b Oct 1875, 24, b TX 1880 Dallas, Dallas Co, TX, page 11 A: Category: Name; Relationship to head of household; Marital Status; Gender; Race; Age; Birthplace; Occupation; Father's Birthplace; Mother's Birthplace. Maybe the enumerator missed her in above household and just wrote her in to be counted: Terry, Winterfield, 64, b SC (female) [I believe this is Winnie and I'm willing to bet her given name is a family name, watch for it.] 1860 DeSoto Co, MS: Terry, W. 54, b SC (female) - land 10,000/20,000 " S.M., 23, b SC (f) " Chas. In 1870, after the war, there are several mulatto and black Terry families in the county. Note, J.S. not in the household, but I bet if you can find this family on the 1850 census he'll be there. See him below.] Same county: Terry, Joseph, 25, b MS, listed all alone as overseer. I would say he is in charge of a plantation that has an absentee landlord and slaves that need watching. Common in those days. Page 140, looks like another young Terry male: Terry, R.W., 21, b MS listed alone as overseer. In neighboring county, but across the state line in Memphis, Shelby Co, TN: Terry, James S., 26, b SC, salesman - personal value 1600 He is listed among other salesmen, bank clerks, merchants etc. Probably the business district in Memphis and he may be there handling business for the Terry family. I'm willing to bet they grow cotton or maybe tobacco, and he's there making arrangements to buy and sell. I would check out land and probate records for DeSoto Co, MS. I bet you find the father of this Terry clan. Before the Civil War the father of this clan could have owned more then one plantation, growing cotton or tobacco, and these sons were working as overseers after death of their father. Probably lost a lot of the land because of the Civil War, could no longer keep it up without those slaves. See who show up as heirs in final sale of Terry land. Check out DeSoto Co, MS GenWeb site. Type in Terry in the search feature, up comes 34 items. Besides various records, looks like there are othere researchers working on the Terry line there, too. You need to click and look at these items, I didn't take the time. Death certificate for Callie Terry (Ruth's mother) should give you the names of her parents. She is alive and a widow on the 1910 census and 1920 census in Dallas Co. I don't see her as head of a household on the 1930 census, she could be living with one of her children, I did not look them all up. You could double check on Ancestry.com, which has an everyname index. If you do not have a subscription, your local Family History Center does, and you can use theirs. TX state archives has a TX state wide death index 1903-1940 and you could get her full date of death from them.
