LeGUENEC family [France > Louisiana > Texas]

Below is a lot of information on the LEGUENEC family of Louisiana & Texas. I post it here in hopes that this information finds it's way to a LEGUENEC descendant. Perhaps someone reading this will share it with members of the LEGUENEC family. I begin with a later generation and work back to the earlier.

JOSEPH RAOUL LEGUENEC III

Joseph Raoul LEGUENEC III (8 Nov 1926 - 1956) was the son of Joseph Raoul LEGUENEC II and Alynne Elizabeth SUGGS.

His father, Joseph Raoul LEGUENEC II is buried in the same cemetery.

JOSEPH RAOUL LEGUENEC II

Joseph Raoul LEGUENEC II (son of Joseph Raoul LEGUENEC I and Rosa WINSTON) became a civil engineer/Surveyor for the railroad. He is shown twice on the 1830 Census. This could indicate they perhaps kept a 2nd residence, or perhaps they were in the process of moving. Whoever gave information to the census enumerator at the 1st location gave slightly different information than did the person giving the information at the 2nd location (note the slight differences in their census record entries for that year).

Divorced women were sometimes known to claim to be “widows” to circumvent the stigma associated with being a "divorce woman".

Note in the following obituary that Rosa (WINSTON) LEGUENEC died in Tyler, Texas, which is where her son Joseph Raoul LEGUENEC II resided and is buried:

LEGUENEC, Mrs. Rosa W., nee WINSTON, born c. 1873, died October 24, 1954 in Tyler, Texas. She married Joseph R. LEGUENEC on October 5, 1892. She ran the "Abbeville Home School." Rosa and A.J. Golden were in charge of Abbeville's public schools, and they gave an exhibition in 1892. In 1900, Mrs. LEGUENEC was running another private school. Her husband, Joseph LEGUENEC, served as a deputy assessor in the early 1890s and was also a "sugar weigher" for some of the major local sugar refineries. In 1900, Mr. LEGUENEC was elected mayor of Abbeville, and was reelected each year until 1908.

Rosa (WINSTON) LEGUENEC was a daughter of Thomas WINSTON and Mary Celeste MOSS:

WINSTON, Thomas S., born July 20, 1826, in Virginia, died November 21, 1893 at his Rose Bower Plantation. He married Mary Celeste Rose, nee MOSS, the widow of David Rose, in 1855. Their daughter, Rosa, married Joseph LEGUENEC (see Rosa LEGUENEC). Thomas WINSTON had been a pioneer sugar planter of Vermilion parish. It was said that his plantation had produced the "best molasses in the world." This property was later renamed the Charity Plantation. His remains were buried on his plantation. On July 15, 1918, Mr. WINSTON's remains were exhumed and were placed in a vault in the old Masonic Cemetery.

WINSTON, Mary Celeste, nee MOSS, born 1830, died on June 18, 1895, "after a lingering illness," at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Joseph R. LEGUENEC (see LEGUENEC, Rosa). She had first married David Rose in 1846, and after his death in 1852, Mary Celeste married Thomas S. WINSTON in 1855. She was the mother of five children. One of her children, Rosa LEGUENEC, who died in 1954, was buried with her.

1920 US Census Records show Joseph R. LEGUENEC (Joseph Raoul LEGUENEC I) residing in Beaumont, Jefferson County, Texas remarried to May A. They are shown twice on the 1920 census – in two locations. Perhaps they kept two residences.
