I didn't find an elderly Anna Cannon nearby on 1870 census Washington Co, TX, but did see Mary W. Cannon 56 b SC, and on next page a Thomas C. Cannon 37 b SC. I tracked him back to Calhoun Co, AL.

1860 census Calhoun Co, AL:

Cannon, T.C., 26, b SC - Shoe & Bootmaker (shoemaker 1870)
" Ann, 26, b SC
" Mary, 8, b AL
" James C., 6, b AL
" Osker (?)., 3, b AL

Next door:

Cannon, Mary W., 43, b SC, land 200/personal 200
" James, 19, b AL

Now, there is a Theophilus Cannon 80 b VA and Barbra 53 b SC, rest of household born AL. This could be father-in-law of Mary W. Cannon. Meaning Cannons could have gone VA>SC>AL. Barbra may be second younger wife, or maybe a widowed d-in-l(?)

You might check land and probate records, who shows up as heirs of Theophilus?

Since Irene Giles shows up as a stepdaughter to Mary Cannon Butler's husband James. I think Mary married a Giles in Calhoun Co, AL - maybe he died in the Civil War.

1860 census Calhoun Co, AL:

Giles, Wm, 22, b SC, BRICKLAYER, no land/personal 100
" "P." H., 18, b AL
" Irene M., 1, b AL
Note, first initial looks like a "P", but it wouldn't be the first time an enumerator made a mistake and occupation for William is bricklayer -- you mention birck mason as occupation for James Cannon and Butler in TX.

You need to look at the 1850 census, but county name will be Benton for that census. County name changed to Calhoun, in 1858. I think you'll find both James and your Mary living with Mary W. and probably her husband on that census, you then would pick up your Mary's father's name, too.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
