There are two Emma Carltons on the 1880 census index, I went with the one born in TX. After sending response to you, I was cleaning off index site for more research for someone else when I just clicked on the "other" Emma b LA. Now, I'm not so sure my first response was good. This Emma has a brother named Curtis and your Emma named a son Curtis, not too common. You may want to check out this Carlton family, too.

1880 census Sabine Co, TX:

Henry CARLTON Self M Male W 37 AL Farmer GA GA
Laura CARLTON Wife M Female W 32 MS AL AL
Emma CARLTON Dau S Female W 12 LA AL MS
John CARLTON Son S Male W 10 TX AL MS
H. Clay CARLTON Son S Male W 5 TX AL MS
Ella CARLTON Dau S Female W 2 TX AL MS
Curtis CARLTON Son S Male W 10M TX AL MS

1870 census Sabine Co, TX:

Carlton, H.H., 26, b AL
" Laura, 22, b MS
" Lola, 4, LA
" Emma, 2, b LA
" John, 1, b TX

It just goes to show you should always check out all possible leads. (^_^)

If that is your Carlton family, check out 1900 census Sabine Co, TX -- Henry & Laura are there with a "boarder" Wm. Click, 62, b AL, Laura's father is shown as b AL.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
