1880 census Kaufman Co, TX:

Category: Name; Relationship to head of household; Marital Status; Gender; Race; Age; Birthplace; Occupation; Father's Birthplace; Mother's Birthplace.

Elizabeth MORRIS Self W Female W 27 TX Keeping House TN TN
Marion MORRIS Son S Male W 7 TX At Home LA TX
Zella MORRIS Dau S Female W 5 TX At Home LA TX
Josie MORRIS Dau S Female W 2 TX At Home LA TX

Looks like William may have been born in LA. Elizabeth's children all show father born in LA. Check land and probate records for Kaufman Co, TX. If William owned land then also check for guardianship records. Yes, even if the mother was living the court would appoint a guardian, not to physically take and raise the children, but to report back to the court of any sale etc of the estate, to protect the interests of the minor children. By 1880 the court might have allowed the mother to be the guardian. I have one in 1889 in Wilbarger Co, TX who petitioned the court and was given guardianship of her children. She then had to do the reporting to the court. With records of any kind, you never know what "extra" information may be included that could help in your research.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
