I see Tyler Co, TX has marriage records early. You might try for marriage of Susan and J.W., hoping she uses her maiden name on the record. You say you think William was in the county as early as 1854, his marriage to Susan more then likely took place there, too.

Tyler Co, TX GenWeb site has marriage records portion under construction. You might try RAOGK (Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness), there are 3 volunteers listed for Tyler Co, TX, and a couple of them will do courthouse lookups.

Keep in mind the mother and stepfather of those children were born in GA, and that might be all they heard about growing up.
