The Family History Library is in Salt Lake City, but there are Family History Centers all over the place. You probably haven't used the LDS site:

Up in the right hand side, click on Site Map. Scroll down, keep going past the Family History Library to Family History Centers, and click on Find a Family History Center and follow the instructions. Looks like there are several in Harris Co, but some seem to be open very limited hours.

NOW, in Houston they have the well known Clayton Library. You will want to visit there, and see their genealogy collection. They can probably tell you which local FHC is the largest and has the best hours.

You are going to have sooooo much fun, trust me. Well, there will be "dry" spells, but it makes the rest all the more exciting. (^_^)
