Have you looked at any published county histories?Basic as it sounds, often we overlook them.Early settlers/pioneers in a county are often at least mentioned, and any military affiliation seems to be important in the early county histories.
If you find one in a library that doesn't circulate their collectioin, say like the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, send a request to photocopy the pages in the index that would contain your surname/surnames.Then if your people are in the index, you can send another request giving page numbers you'd like photocopied. The fee should be minimal.Be sure to check the FHLC to see if the book has been microfilmed, you then can order out the film/fiche to your local FHC.
Don't forget to see if there is a local "historical" society, besides a genealogical society, in that area. And, check NUCMC see if anyone put together a manuscript that was never published.I found one done on the history of a Texas county for someone's thesis, and my people were included -- they helped form Hamilton Co. TX.
And, what was it with early Texans and using just inititals?Drives me crazy with some of my common surnames.LOL
