Credentials for ministers, preachers, etc.

Seeking information where the credentials for ministers, preachers, etc. could be found, besides their church records. Were ministers, preachers, etc. in Texas required to have a "license" to perform marriages in the state? Was there a legal requirement for the ministers to "register" in order for them to perform marriage ceremonies? Appreciate any information.
