I don't see a 4 month old son in the household on the 1910 census, maybe you misunderstood abbreviations.

1910 census Lamar Co, TX:

Bowen, James E., hd, 30 M(1) 4/12, b AL, MS, MS
" Mary, wf, 23, M(1) 4/12, b MS, GA, GA

Bowen, James E., head, age 30, Married one time, length of marriage 4/12.

I had looked at the 1920 census, but so many and none seemed to match this James. (^_^)
