You are in luck because he died in Texas. Here is the response from the Texas Archives when queried about John Wade Matthews' death. The Texas Death Index 1903-1940 was checked with the following results:

Search #1: Matthews, John Wade
INDEX: Texas Deaths, 1903-1940 cumulative index
NAME LOCATED: Matthews, John
COUNTY: Denton
DATE: 6-22-1918

If you want a copy of the death certificate I suggest you contact the County Clerk, Denton County, Texas.

Good luck with your search.
