Did your father die in TX? I looked at the TX Dth Idx, there are two "possibles" John E. died 30 Sep 1974 Midland Co, TX, and John Elbert died 2 Oct 1993 Tyler Co, TX.
Here is a site where you can get the information on how to order a copy of his Soc Sec application. But, I'd like to know more about your father, was he receiving SS benefits when he died? Did he die after 1963? It will make a difference as to whether he will show up on the computerized SS Dth Idx, or not. Those who died prior to about 1963, may not show up for the online index, but you still can obtain a copy of his application.
