Hi Rowena.

I found John and Rebecca in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 censuses:
1850 Texas, Milam County, Milam and Williamson, Page 6
Dwelling 298/Family 311
John Crabtree, 52, white, blacksmith, $100 real estate, b Tennessee
Rebecca, 47, white, b Tennessee, cannot read or write
James A., 18, farmer, b Illinois
Rebecca M., 14, b Missouri
John A., 12, b Arkansas
William N., 10, b Missouri
Ephraim J, 7, b Texas

1860 California, Tulare county, Page 23
Dwelling 180/Family 180
John Crabtree, 65, blacksmith, $3000 real estate, b Tennessee
Rebecca, 53, housekeeper, b Tennessee
James, 28, farmer, b Illinois
John, 20, farmer, b Missouri
William, 19, farmer, b Missouri
Ephraim, 17, vaquero, b Texas

1870 California, Tulare County, Page 271
Dwelling 255/Family 244
James Crabtree, 40, white, raising stock, $800 real estate, $3000 personal property, b Illinois
Paulina, 29, white, keeping house, b Missouri
William, 9, b CA
Thomas, 7, b CA
Maria, 5, b CA
Dwelling 256/Family 245
John Crabtree, 75, white, gardner, b Tenn
Rebecca, 67, keeping house, b Tenn

You might want to look at tax and land records in Milam County, TX and Tulare County, CA between 1850 and 1860 to see when the family moved.

Happy Hunting!
Karen
