Ora, Bessie, and Hazel Altman circa 1910..Help
TO: Lists: Altman, Slusser, Witt
Oklahoma City, Ok; Austin,Texas; Lake County, Indiana; Huntington, Indiana; StarkCounty, Ohio; Holmes County, Ohio;
Through the help of cousin and friend, Walt Pollock, I received information for Oklahoma City on the 1930 census. This renewed my interest with new facts: My GG Mother Ella was age 70 and living in 1930. The family thought that she had died sometime around 1926. Her son, my
g father’s brother “Alvin” may have changed his name to Jack Alvin Altman. It has been some time since I put information and a query out there, so here goes.
Josiah Sylvester Altman, (Son of Eligah, Grandson of Isaac) b. April 1855 Coshocton, Ohio, d. bef 1920 Oklahoma City, Ok.; married December 17, 1877 in St. Joseph County, Indiana to Ella Slusser, b. 1859 Huntington, Indiana (NOT to Eli & Roseamanda Howenstein Slusser), d. after 1930 Oklahoma City, OK. Moved to Farm, growing rhubarb , Lovely Heights District, Daviees County, MO. (Just over the line from) Caldwell County and outside of Hamilton, MO.All children born in Hamilton, MO. Children: Proctor (Clay D.) (Grandfather to Richard J. Altman) b. Dec. 2, 1879, d. Jan. 1968, Seattle, Wa.; Ora b. Jan 1881; Bessie, b. Dec 1884; Earl D., b. May 1888; Ralph, b. Sept 1889; Hazel, b. April 1892; Alva (Alvin), Aug 1896; Russell, b. May 7, 1901, d. Aug 1982, Oklahoma City, OK.
I assume that Josiah died before 1920 because he does not appear in the 1920 census, only Ella living in Oklahoma City with sons Earl, Alva, and Russell at 1610 West 27th St. Josiah does appear in the 1910 census.The girls, Ora, Bessie, Hazel, are not mentioned and I have to presume that they have married (Ora would have been 29, Bessie 26, and Hazel, 18). I have no other information on the girls. I cannot find Josiah in any Obit query. I only know that one of the girls married a man who was a Senator (I think of Kansas, or Nebraska, Iowa ??) Between 1939-1944.My father tried to pay him a visit at his Senate office in D.C. and was declined a visit for whatever reason.
Ella appears as “Ella” and “Ellen” on various census records. On earlier census it has her father born in Pennsylvania with the mother born in Indiana. In the 1930 census, her father is born in Ohio.... Other clues point me to Canton, Stark County; Isaac and Eligah Altman were in Mechanics Township, Holmes County, Ohio; My last residence for Isaac is in Lake County, Indiana (I would really really appreciate if I could find when and where and a obit) ; last residence for Eligah, Daviees County, Mo; again Josiah was born in Coshocton (City or County ?), Ohio.
I know that there were Altman’s, Slusser’s and Howenstein’s in Stark County,.... but in talking to the family of Eli and Roseamanda Howenstine Slusser, their Ella, born 1859 in Huntington, Indiana never married. I cannot tie my Ella to any Slusser family at this time.
Information on Josiah’s sons:
Earl D. d. Sept 1969. 1920 census lives at 1610 West 27th St. Oklahoma City, Ok. He was a retailer of Electrical goods. In the 1930 census, he is now married to a Pearl L. ? b. 1895. It appears that they were married in 1925. As a child I remember hearing my parents mention Earl & Pearl...but never met. Do not know if they had children, but would like to find out.
Ralph married a Loula, b. 1890 in La. Her father from Iowa, mother from Indiana. In 1920 Ralph resided at 703 West 23rd St., Oklahoma City, Ok. He is listed as a Retailer for wholesale electrical fixtures. I have never heard him mentioned, nor if they had children.
Alvin in the 1920 census lived at 1610 West 27thSt. He was a retailer of electrical goods. Interestingly enough, no Alvin appears in the 1930 census, but a Jack A. Altman does. My thoughts are that might be Jack Alvin Altman. I say this, because it appears several ofthe Altman’s changed names; Proctor to Clay D. Altman, my father was born Clifford Lewis Altman and changed it to Jack Lewis Altman (from what I can see from his military records sometime in the 1920's) . My Aunt Evelyn was born Sadie. I think that this is a pretty good chance that Jack is Alvin.
Jack shows as age 32 in the census, but prior census has him born in Aug 1896. Depending on what month in 1930 the census was taken etc, I think that this difference can be still considered.
In the 1920 census, he is not married...which would be correct. By 1930 he is. Going off the age of the wife, it looks like he was married in 1922 / 23 to Rose E. (?) Altman, b. 1899 in Mo. Her father and Mother both born in Mo. Their children were: Mary J. Altman age 4, b. 1926 ? And James W. age 1 ½, b. 1928/1929. Of course there could be more born after 1930. I would really like to connect with any living child etc.
Russell and his wife Naomi were probably the closest to my parents. They were best man and matron of honor at their wedding July 29, 1939 in Washington D.C. They also visited my childhood home in El Cajon, near San Diego, Ca. I never met them. I was out of the home and married...living some distance away.They lived in D.C. at the time where Russell worked for the General Accounting Office of the U.S. Government. My dad was stationed their in the Navy and sent my mom a plane ticket for her to fly from Seattle to D.C. to get married. Russ and Naomi moved back to Oklahoma City, Ok, where they spent their remaining days. There MAY have been a child Joan Carmen Altman. A old marriage announcement has her married to a Ernest Doyle Witt Jan 9, 1954 at 533 Showalter Dr., Midwest City, Ok. at 8 PM. Ernest died August 1, 1996 at Austin, Travis County, Texas. He is buried at Ft. Sam Houston Cemetery in San Antonio. I sent a letter to the cemetery and asked them to forward to the surviving family. I received a confirmation from the cemetery, but nothing from the family. Interestingly enough last Social Security benefits for both Russ and Naomi were paid to an address in Austin, Texas.
I would be very grateful if anyone can offer additional information on these individuals. Thank you and God Bless.
