Elijah and Rutha are my greatgrandparents.
Elijah was born in 1839 in Noxubee, MS. He migrated to TX in 1851 with his parents, William and Mary Wilson, He does not appear on the 1860 census with them; however he and his brother, James joined the 6th Texas infantry, company A; known as the "Lavaca Guards" on 9/27/1861.
Elijah and James were catured at Arkansas Post, sent to a POW camp in IL. They were exchanged in VA in 1862. They rejoined the Combined 6th and 18th Texas Infantry in GA.
Elijah was wounded 3 times before discharge as disabled because of the loss of use of his right arm.
Jim was severely, probably mortally wounded at the Battle of Franklin, TN. Casualties report in the Memphis Times says his left leg and right arm were amputated. He never came home. He is probably one of the unknowns at McGavock Cemetery in Franklin, TN.
Rutha was probably born in TN in 1849. She was a ward of the Lavaca County, TX court with Elijah's Aunt Malona (Hall) and Uncle James T Wilson as her guardians in April, 1859.
Rutha and Elijah are on the 1870 Lavaca County, TX census. They are living with or nextdoor to Malona Wilson, James T died in 1867.
Rutha died in 1898 and is buried in Beckham County, OK with her daughter, Maggie.
I have not found any more about Rutha, except for thier children.
Elijah in on the Greer County, TX in 1900 and the Beckham County, OK in 1910. There was a US Supreme Court ruling that gave this part of Texas to Oklahoma in 1906.
Elijah filed for a Texas CSA pension in 1912 and started receiving a pension in 1913. He died in Runnels, TX in 1917.
Does this ring your genealogical chimes??
