You didn't give names for anyone in your query, so I had to go looking at your message history. You give Johnathan for your grandfather and say his father was John B. Turner, on Kaufman Co, TX forum.
1880 census Menard Co, TX:
Category: Name;Relationship to head of household; Marital Status; Gender; Race; Age; Birthplace; Occupation; Father's Birthplace; Mother's Birthplace.

You asked several questions on the Kaufman Co, TX GenForum.Did you check to see what the Family History Library had microfilmed in the way of records for Kaufman Co, TX?They have land records as early as 1846, so tax records probably survived, too.You can obtain microfilmed county tax records from Austin through your local PUBLIC library on interlibrary loan. They include poll taxex, too.I found on of my husband's ancestors that way, never owned land, but he did own a mule and paid a poll tax.
Have you checked the Kaufman Co, TX GenWeb site?See what records they may have on there. Some GenWeb counties have a list of volunteers who will do specific lookups.Post a query on that site, too; BUT, do include names and dates for your ancestors. (^_^)
You say your grandfather did not have SS number, how do you know?Did you check with the SS Administration???Since you know when and where he died, I certainly would give it a try.
Happy Hunting (^_^)
