Hi Connie.
I found this information about a few of the Despains in Titus County.:
1850 Titus county, TX, Page 95 Dwelling 18/Family 18
John M Griffith, 23, farmer, $500 real estate value, b NC
Rachel Griffith, 17, b Tennessee
Margaret Griffith, 11 months, b TX
David D'Spain, 19, farmer, b Alabama
Hetty D'Spain, 10, b Tennessee
Rachel A. Despain married John M. Griffith on 2 Mar 1848 in Hopkins County, TX.
1880 Texas, Hood county, Precinct 6, Page 37A. Dwelling 79/Family 82.
David Despain, white, 49, married, head, laborer, b Alabama, father b KY, mother b SC
Claryann, 44, wife, married, keeping house, b Tennesse, father b Tennesse, mother b NC
Cora, 21, daughter, at school, b Texas
Emma, 19, daughter, at home, b Texas
Lillie, 10, daughter, at school, b Texas
Randy, 8, daughter, b Texas
James, 2, son, b Texas
It looks like David, Rachel, and Hetty were probably siblings.Hetty would then be the H.S. DeSpain listed in the 1854 school census. While I was looking through the census indices, I noticed that most of the DeSpains seemed to be concentrated in Hopkins County.I'm assuming that it is geographically close to Titus County.
Happt Hunting!
Karen
