I thought you sounded like you had researched Brittain, so didn't include all of this. "Republic of Texas: Poll Lists for 1846", compiled by Marion Day Mullins shows:

Britton Dawson, Robertson Co, TX
Dread Dawson, Robertson Co, TX.

1880 census Navarro Co, TX:

Categories: Name; Relationship to head of household; Marital Status; Gender; Race; Age; Birthplace; Occupation; Father's Birthplace; Mother's Birthplace.

Britton DAWSON Self M Male W 60 AL Farmer GA GA
Susana C. DAWSON Wife M Female W 50 TN Keeping House TN TN
Britton DAWSON Son S Male W 13 TX Farming AL TN
Frank DAWSON Son S Male W 11 TX Farming AL TN

As you can see both sons were born in TX. I think Hugh saw the column for birth location of their father.

Dred DAWSON Self M Male W 60 FL Farmer GA GA
Elizabeth DAWSON Wife M Female W 42 AL Keeping House AL GA
Malinda DAWSON Dau S Female W 14 TX At Home FL AL
William HANSON SSon S Male W 22 TX Farm Laborer AL AL
John MCKNIGHT Other S Male W 25 TX Farmer AL MS
Robert MCKNIGHT Other S Male W 16 TX Farm Laborer AL MS

Note unusal given names Britton and Dred, and Britton born in GA, and Dred in FL. There may be more then one Dread/Dred Dawson as stories say he is the father of Brit. and Dread was from that part of AL in or near the panhandle of FL.

You still don't say what year Nancy was born. Maybe she was born after the 1880 census, I don't see her listed among any of the Dawsons in Navarro Co, TX.

Have you checked out the Navarro Co, TX GenWeb site? Type in Dawson in their search feature. Up comes 309 items, but of course some are referring to the town of Dawson, too. But, the first item is about the DAWSON FAMILY. If you ever do tie to this Dawson line, you will find a "ton" of stuff on them back across the pond, too. Or, you can type in Britton, and up will come some items for people with the surname of Britton, but others will be about Britton Dawson and members of his family. Should keep you busy for awhile. (^_^)
