For the 1880 census, better then the Soundex is the online version from the LDS which indexes everyone in the household, not justhead of household. This means you can search for wife, children or anyone living witht the family.
http://www.familysearch.orghttp://www.familysearch.org - on the left side of the screen click on census. On the next screen be sure to choose U.S. 1880 census, or your search will include the Canadian 1881 and British Isles 1881, too.
Any place that has the complete set of census records on microfilm will include the Soundexes, too.Find out where researchers in your area go to look at the filmed federal censuses. There are 13 NARA branches across the country (NARA = Nat'l Archives Records Admins).Or, some large libraries with good genealogical collections will have the census and Soundex.
All states have a Soundex for 1900, about 21 stateshave it for 1910; and all states for the 1920 will have Soundex or Miracode.Miracode is basically the same system, just uses a different presentation format.About 13 Southern states have the Soundex for 1930 census.
Happy Hunting (^_^)
