Thanks Joan. Yes, I was able to get a copy of Paul's death certificate. It lists mother as "unknown." My next step is to send off to Texas for his birth certificate. Hopefully the info on the death certificate will be enough for the Vital Records to find it, but the way my luck has been going, who knows?

I'm census drunk, I've searched so many. I'm down to browsing the un-indexed ones (that'll make you go cross-eyed ya know).
