Good luck Janet

In the Cherokee Co. Historical Book, I found the name Georgia Ann Odom Hassell ---she was born March 4, 1857 in Cherokee Co., Tx. and died June 24, 1951, in the home of her son, B. F. Hassell, in Palestine, Tx., Anderson Co. She married Christopher Columbus Hassell Dec. 23, 1875. She was the daughter of Permilia Jane Sherman and Thomas Henry Odom. She was the 2nd of 12 children, had brown hair, fair complexion, and was about five feet, two inches tall.

As a young girl, she lived with her family in the Gent community near present Maydelle, in Chreokee Co. (this is the same area that William lived in and also the photographer that took some of the family photos).

Life following the war was hard with little food and no money; but , fortunately, there was the home and the land. So scarce were the necessities of everyday life, Georgia Ann recalled, that they would go into the smokehouse and scoop dirt from beneath the meat racks, placing it into the water to dissolve the salt. The water was then poured off and boiled to evaporate the moisture, thus obtaining salt for seasoning food.

Georgia Ann was 18 years old and her sister, Mary Alice, was 16 when they married cousins in a double-wedding ceremony Dec. 23, 1875. Georgia Ann married Christopher Columbus Hassell and Mary Alice married his cousin John Hassell, in what was described as "quite an affair." Georgia Ann and Christopher setteled in Anderson Co. near the Fields Chapel community, where they farmed and ranched. (this is between Rusk and Palestine, but closer to Palestine) Their oldest Daughter Mary Jane married W. Y. Watts, she was born Oct. 11, 1876 and died March 27, 1947. Her brother Christopher Columbus Jr. married Fannie Watts. Christopher was born Jan. 28, 1882 and died May 8, 1916. This article was written by Harmon Watts.
