Hi Linda, I think giving a list of names and then saying they all were born in over a hundred year time span is probably too general. I checked your message history and on one response you state Jesse Newton McElreath was born 1870. I was trying to find him on TX Dth idx and SSDI, but with that info I know he probably died too early to be on either index.

And, as for your father John R., there are two "possible" matches from those two sources, as I try to put some of your family in a narrower time frame:

John R. McElreath, b 25 Apr 1910; d 24 Dec 1970 Potter Co, TX, last residence Amarillo, Potter Co, TX; SS card issued in TX.

John R. McElreath, b 26 Jun 1936; d 4 Jun 1993 Angelina Co, TX; last residence Lufkin, Angelina Co, TX; SS card issued in OK. [TX Dth Idx shows name as Johnny Ray]

Do you know when and where James A. McElreath died? TX began keeping vital records in 1903 and you can obtain a copy of his death certificate, which should show the names of his parents.

Have you been able to find any of these people on census records? That will help to sort out approximate birth years, and birth locations. You may be further into your research, if so, forgive me if I make suggestions you've already tried. But, have you looked at the GenWeb sites for all those various counties you listed? Some GenWeb counties are putting their cemeteries online.

Since you know James fought in the Civil War, you may be aware of a Confederate pension application for a J.A. McElreath #19872 in Titus Co, TX.

You don't give anything on the Samuel McElreath in your list of people, so I don't know when he was born, but there is a Samuel Houston McElreath who applied for a Confederate pension from one of the counties in your list, Hunt Co.
Happy Hunting.
