William Frank Smith
I am trying to find information about my grandfather, William Frank Smith, born about August 15, 1886 in either Lampasos (don't know if it's the town or the county) Texas or somewhere in Germany. We believe his mother's name was Amelia and that he had at least one sister. The father's name may have been the same as his or a German version. His son and grandson have the same name. This Bill Smith died in 1942 in Baton Rouge, LA but was buried in Roselawn Cemetery in San Antonio. He was married to Ara Elizabeth Galloway in July or August, 1914 in San Antonio, Texas. Both worked for a bakery there at the time. They moved to Baton Rouge, LA sometime between 1915 and 1920.
Bill Smith's father was abusive, so the story goes, and Bill, at the age of about 10 years, ran away from home, got on a ship and made it to Germany where he lived with his grandmother (don't know if it was maternal or paternal) until she sent him back to the USA fearing he would be conscripted into the German army.We have no more information that this, but would like to find out whatever we can.We know that the name "Smith" makes it more difficult. His mother's surname was "Schmidt."There is some speculation that he and his mother came to the USA, to Texas, and she married a Mr. Smith who was Bill's stepfather, not his biological father. If this man sounds like someone you've found information on, or if he seems to fit with information on his mother, sister, or other siblings or relatives, we would be very grateful for whatever information you might share with us.
