Have you tried the Soundex for the 1880 census for Mahlon and Abigail? Most of the 1890 census was destroyed, but I would also look for them on the 1900 census. It will help you learn the county of their residence at the time of the censuses.

You might check the Jackson Co, WI GenWeb site, some GenWeb counties are putting their cemeteries online. If not on the county site, be sure to check the archived section of the Wisconsin GenWeb site. You might find members of the Newton family buried there. Post your query on that site, also.

And, if you think the Hocketts stayed in Macon Co, MO, do the same for Macon Co, MO GenWeb site for the Hockett family.
