Have you checked census records? Sarah and Wm were married in TN, then moved to TX where John was born in 1868, were there older children then John? Were Sarah & Wm married by 1860, if so, check Sistler's multi volume set of early TN marriages (prior to 1860). Not all counties are included, but a good place to start, you might find county in TN where they came from. Sarah's family would probably be living in the county where she married.

Look at the 1870 census for Wm & Sarah, when John would be about 2 yrs old. Follow the family on census records, see if you can find when and where Sarah and Wm died. TX began keeping vital records in 1903, there's just a possibility one or both of them lived long enough to generate death certificates. They should show the names and birth locations of their respective set of parents.
