Charles,
Have you ever reviewed the 1920 census to try and establish your g grandfather's county of residence? You can sometimes find a death record in the county records that never got reported to the state. About 20% of the biriths and deaths went unreported during the period 1903-1925.

Was your G Grandfather in the Civil War? Many times the pension records provide considerable information including date and location of death.

You mention searching the death index 1903-1940. Did you actually make this search yourself or was it made for you?
