Even one date is good.I would look for records in Bexar Co, TX from about 1865 to 1875, to be sure you cover when John's father might have been killed.Since John was a minor, look for guardianship records. If his father owned cattle, he probably owned land, too.Look for probate, and land records.A guardian for John, and/or any other minor children in the family, would have to report any transactions regarding sale or disposition of land, cattle etc.If land was sold, and if John's mother was alive at the time, she would have signed off, adult/children heirs would sign off, and guardian for minor children would sign off.In regards to land records, you may have to look even later, if there was any dispute etc, they could take a long time, even as some do today.
Many of these types of records have been filmed by the LDS, and film or fiche can be obtained on loan through your local Family History Center. You can check the Family History Library Catalog online.Click on Library, then click on FHLC.

You might check out the Bexar Co, TX GenWeb site, see what kind of local records they might have put online. Some GenWeb counties are putting their cemeteries online.Post your query, plus ask if anyone has a county history, and would they check for any information on the killing of a man named Denton, possilby son, or sons, killed too.In the time frame of about 1865-1975.
