A couple of handy hints. The lists usually are only alphabetical by the first letter, so all "Ws" would be lumped together. One county I looked at when they filmed the records they chopped off the top of the page where the headings were located. I couldn't figure out why the alphabet started over 4 times. Finally got far enough along that the headings began to show up. There were four catagories, and I don't know if all counties did this -- Current Tax Payer; Delinquent Taxpayer; Non-Resident Taxpayer; and County Resident Owning land in another county. Apparently some counties collected from their local people and sent the taxes to other counties where they owned land. Always watch for these "other" counties. Sometimes when you lose someone, they may have moved on to the land in that "other" county. So, read all the headings carefully.
