Have you tried county tax records? You can obtain TX county tax records, on microfilm, on interlibrary loan through your local Public Library from State Archives in Austin. They are available from the formation of a county up to about 1900, I think. Even if they didn't own land, if he owned so much as a mule there would be a record of a pole tax. Check men named Morse, when one disappears off the tax, and Mary Ann appears, he is dead and she is a widow.
