His middle name was Williamson--the son's name, that is. God knows I've looked so many places. I think I did go through the 1850 census. I've got access to the Texas genealogical records and do recall going over everything they had. Yes, George Williamson Morse was born in Hempstead, Texas. He was ten years old in 1860.
I never found one thing until I got to the 1860 census and would have missed the children and Mary Ann had I not known of John Kewley, her second husband. In fact, I seem to recall now he was on the 1850 census. He had a first wife and I do remembering hearing that he was a neighbor of Mary Ann's.
I went to Hempstead and looked at land records and did find a Mary Ann Harrison but it was the wrong one. I've also looked through some almanacs. I only found her the one time in land grants and deeds for Grimes Co. You'll have to forgive me, but it's been a while since I was actively looking for that side. I got sidetracked on another line because I was so frustrated with this one.
I'm wondering whether the original Morse moved around or what. I've been told another variation on the name is Moss and have looked at those, too. I heard that Morse and Mary Ann got married when they ran off from Indianapolis and the family was under the impression they got married in MO, probably St. Louise.
But guess what? I found no record of them so far in the marriage index of MO. I wonder if they really got married or if it was a common law thing or what? You can see my dilemma. I don't expect the answers will come over night in a situation like this.
I do believe Mary Ann is buried in Grimes Co. My uncle wants to go find her and get a headstone if she doesn't have one. We think we have a good lead on this. Our leads just haven't taken us to the Morse line so far!
I was wondering about Mary Ann's name on the deed I saw. I wonder why her name was on it. Seems like it would have been her deceased husband's name. I never figured out how she acquired it. I wonder if her Morse husband was hiding from someone? I hear they had a ranch out that way, but wonder if they were actually homesteading?
