Since you know when and where David died, have you obtained a copy of his death certificate? It should show the names and birth locations of his parents.
Once you have his father's name, you can check census records, beginning with 1840 and follow the family through later ones, too. The 1850 is the first one to name everyone in the household, and easier to know you have right family from there forward.
