Did Byron's father die?You say Mattie remarried, did Byron live with her?I would look for Byron with whomever he was living in 1910 census.Being closer to his birth year, and information given by someone other then himself, probably a parent, it might give you a better idea of his correct birth year.
It is was not uncommon for men to lie about birth year on military registrations.Some wanting to be old enough to enlist.I know my uncle did so in WWII.The application for a Social Security card would be the furthest from his birth, and also might have an error.But, if anyone was going to make them selves older, it would be on a SS application, to receive benefits earlier.I had a great uncle who "tried" to lie about his age to receive benefits one year sooner.I have copies of his correspondence and it is a hoot to see how he attempted to hoodwink the SS Dept -- he didn't get away with it.And, since Byron didn't make himself older on the application, I would think 1903 is correct.
Byron's CA dth record shows his birthdate as 6 Sep 1903.
