I'm born and bred Southern California gal, but my ancestors came from TX, and my husband is 3rd generation Texican, so I've done a lot of TX research.
You're fortunate to have your DAVIS line back as far as you do, as it is one of those very common surnames.
If you haven't used the Handbook of TX Online, I'm guessing you haven't used the GenWeb sites either. Here is a hyperlink that will take you to the TX GenWeb site, scroll down to County Index option, from there you can find county/counties of your research.Click and look at everything offered on all the sites. Some GenWeb counties are putting their cemeteries online, and some are even getting other local records online, too.
At the state level, click and search all material offered.Get to know all the sites of your research, they are done by volunteers, so some items will be "named" a little differently, hence the reason to get familiar with the sites.A good one to begin with, on TX state level, is Texas Research Help. This will lead you to other hyperlinks such as the Handbook site I gave in previous posting, plus TX Ranger Museum & Confederate Museum (both have records); Confederate Pension Index Online (different from the museum); TX State Lib & Archives etc etc.You may not need all the info at this time, but you will have some idea of where to find it when the need arises.
Once you finish with all of TX, see the very first option on that site -- USGenWeb Project -- click and you will be at the U.S. level. From there you can choose any state, and then county/counties within those states -- and you are off and running again. Some sites may have something on local churches, be sure to watch for same.Post queries on the county GenWeb sites, give your family info, then ask questions -- like the one about local church records etc.
