There are 2 Smithvilles in TX, I hope you know which county -- Bastrop or Gonzales.I would check the GenWeb site for whichever county is correct, some Genweb counties are putting their cemeteries online. If you can find his death date, TX began keeping vital records in 1903 and you can obtain a copy of his death certificate, which should show the names and birth locations of his parents.Post your query on that site, too.Someone else may be working on the same family.
If Walter wasn't the first child, and Crawford was married by 1880, you might try the 1880 census in SC for Crawford and his family. This would place them in a county, and you could check other Cline families in the same county, find a man that fits the right age, then proceed to prove or disprove him as father of Crawford. You could check probates, see if Crawford is listed as an heir, or sale of land -- even in the case of no will, heirs had to sign off, if land was sold.County histories, see if the family was mentioned in a county history there in SC.Lots of records you can try.Good luck.
