Starting Sept. 30, 2014, Genealogy.com will be making a big change. GenForum message boards, Family Tree Maker homepages, and the most popular articles will be preserved in a read-only format, while several other features will no longer be available, including member subscriptions and the Shop.

Message Boards Still a Problem

Merry Christmas Everyone!
If you can stay with me long enough for a quick history lesson I think I can explain why no one seems to be reading your complaints about the horrible changes to your GenForum Message Boards. I do have one suggestion that may or may not help change the situation.

Genealogy.com (the operator for GenForum Message Boards) started in 1984 as Banner Blue Software. In 1989 it developed "Family Tree Maker" which was a terrific success. In 1994 Banner Blue acquired Automated Archives, Inc. of Provo, Utah.

In 1995 Broderbund Software, Inc bought Banner Blue. Three years later in August of 1998 The Learning Company purchased Broderbund but in May the following year The Learning Company and all of its divisions was purchased by Mattel, Inc. (the toy company). Just a few months later it was announced that A & E Television Networks, Hearst New Media & Technology, The Learning Company Division of Mattel, Inc., Thomas H. Lee Company and Weston Presidio Capital had joined together in a new partnership to be called Genealogy.com,LLC

The information for the above taken from the Genealogy.com Web Site. If you want a more detailed account of their growth, see:

So there you have it! Folks, Genealogy.com is big business, really BIG business. How much emphasis do you think they put on a system of message boards that produces absolutely no income for the company. I suspect that is the reason the format for the boards has been changed. To provide more advertising space! Consider also how few manhours they may be willing to devote to maintenance of the message boards and for that matter the quality of those manhours. I would suggest to you that your "feedback" and other complaints may well never be seen by the individuals who have the power and the responsibility to make any decisions about fixing the problems caused by modifying the message boards.

If you are willing to spend 33 cents and a few minutes of your time you might make a difference. Write to Genealogy.Com. Tell them why you are writing and what is wrong with the Message Boards . Tell them also it seems to make no difference if a problem is reported through the "Feedback" function. Here is the address and I suggest you write it down because I doubt it will survive on the boards for very long.
