If it were me, I'd just take the 1880 Soundex and crank through that roll looking at every Hester family for one with a boy about 8 yrs old with initials of J.D. It would help if you knew what they stood for. When you can't prove a family, then disprove them. If there is more then one, work on them, til you eliminate all the "wrong" ones.

Since he died in Riverside Co, CA (I looked at CA dth idx) The Riverside Public Library has newspapers on microfilm, but I don't remember is they go back to 1956. I would go to the Riverside Co, CA GenWeb site, ask if anyone can help you regarding an obituary for J.D. Sometimes obits contain info not included on death certificates.
