William Smithers -- Richmond, Texas

There is a historical marker on the banks of the Brazos river about the fort being built there in 1821. One of the names mentioned is William Smithers.
Does anyone have information about William Smithers?
I have a William Smithers in my family but, I have been unable to establish a connection.
Any information would be appreciated.
