Do you know when and where John Luther Maxwell died? If so, obtain a copy of his death certificate, it should show the names and birth locations of his parents. Also, will have John's birthdate. Armed with the name of John's father, look for the family on the 1900 census. There are questions asked on that census not found on other census records. Month & year of birth of everyone in the household. Married women asked how many children they've had, and how many living at the time of the census - that one helps sort out which children belong to present wife. Names of other children still living at home will be picked up. And, there is other helpful info.
