You are entirely correct about "possible" errors on death certificate. Accuracy only as good as the knowledge of the informant. What I would do is work on the James, and either prove or disprove him as the father. After all, Marvin isn't one of the more common given names, and James looks good for father of Marvin. Look for death of the James, look for probate records, see if son is mentioned. Look for obit, also to see who is mentioned as survivors. You might even look for probate of Lilburn, sometimes grandfathers mention their grandchildren in their wills. Do you know in which county the James resided? If so, post query on both the GenForum and GenWeb county site, requesting information on that James. Maybe someone is working on that line and knows more about him.
