Online muster roll for Company I, 17th Texas Infantry, CSA, lists
John T. Pope, sergeant
James S. Pope
G. J. Pope
I believe, but would like to confirm, that these men are brothers and my kinsmen (4th cousins) who appear in household of John M. Pope (b. NC abt. 1802) and Rebecca [Looters] Pope (b. abt. 1807) in the 1850 census for Montgomery County, Tennessee. John and Rebecca, married in TN in 1827, appear in that census with dtr Margaret, 1 yr., and sons
John T. Pope, 12 (> b. 1837/8)
James S. Pope, 11 (> 1838/9)
Green J. Pope, 5 (> 1844/5)
An online researcher tells me a Green Pope appeared in Bell Co., TX in 1880 census, and another site, listing CSA vets living in 1918, names John and James as well. It seems awfully unlikely that three lads, with names matching even to the middle initials, would all be in the same company and regiment and not be the Pope Bros. earlier from Montgomery Co., TN, but I would like proof if the same can be had.
Any descendants out there?
A Pope Cousin (John M. and my 2d great-grandfather from Jackson Co., FL, William Stuart (I) Pope 1789-1837 were brothers)
