Do you know when and where Sam died? If so, obain a copy of his death certificate, it should have the names and birth locations of his parents.
Check the 1870 TX census for John Story and his family, then follow the family through the census records. Check Erath Co, TX GenWeb site, some GenWeb counties are putting their records online. Post a query and see if anyone has a copy of a published county history, and will check it for your family.
