I would check the Soundex for the 1880 census. Locate where they were living, then look for newspapers published there at that time period. There should be something in newspaper about him being killed, at least an obituary. When you find out the county, check the GenWeb site for that county. Post a query and see if anyone has a published county history and will check it for your family. Some GenWeb counties are putting their cemeteries online, and some are getting even more records online.
