Photo...They're Pickin' Cotton In Texas

I have a photo that I would like to find out where, and what time of year it was taken. It may have a strong bearing on my family history. I would be interested in knowing about the people in the photo, as well.

The setting is in a Texas cotton field. The field meets the sky at the horizon. No trees or structures in sight. It could be any of the following counties: Van Zandt, McLennan, Hill, Ellis, Kaufman. This is just my assumption. I may be surprised what county it is in. But, these, I know, my mother was in during that periond of time.

In the photo is an old truck with wooden slatted sideboards, and it is full of picked cotton. Next to the truck are 6 people.

On the left….sitting on the ground cross-legged ….is my mother. The year is 1949. (When she would show me this photo, she would say that she was pregnant with me).

There is a lady standing next to the truck. She is labeled “Manny”. She is wearing long-sleeved shirt over another shirt, and slacks. Her hair looks like it may be in a bun. Appears she may have a “bonnet” hanging behind her. She is also the oldest person there (50’s - 60’s).

In front of Manny is a boy that looks 5 to 8 years old wearing long-sleeved shirt and overalls. He is labeled “Little Red”.

Little Red has his arm around the shoulder of a man in his 30’s that is hunched down. He is wearing jeans and T-shirt, and a cap that is pushed back on his head. He is labeled “Big Red”.

Behind Big Red is another man in jeans and white t-shirt, wearing a “hat”. He is labeled “?”.

In front of “?” and beside Big Red stands a lady that is wearing glasses and dressed in a dress over slacks. She also looks as though she may have a bonnet hanging behind. She has her “picking sack” draped around her like she is whimsically modeling it. She is labeled “Lois“. She is more in the age range of the two men.

I went by the names written around the edge of the picture. And, assumed Mother wrote them in order. They were in this order: “Manny” … “Little Red”…”Big Red“…”Lois“…”Me“ (my mother)… “?”. I could very easily have the two men’s names mixed up…and/or the two ladies.

If anyone has a feeling they might know the folks in the photo and need to see it. Let me know, and I will email it to you.

Thank you for stopping to check this out.

Shirley
