This is the first I've heard that Gholson was called Sardis before it became Gholson. Handbook of Texas says the area that we know as Gholson was settled in the late 1840s and the community was called Sardis. It became Gholson in the 1880s.

The Brazos definitely runs behind Gholson. The Gholson Cemetery is there.

I found your couple on the 1860 census living in McLennan County, Sardis P.O. Bailey is age 72 b SC. I don't find them on the 1870 census.

You might check with the McLennan County Cemetery interest group to see what other cemeteries might be in that area.
