Years ago I saw a book that detailed Rev.Buckner coming to Jefferson in the 1870?. He was establishing an orphange. Some citizens of Marion County assisted him during that time. Don't know where I saw that book or the title. Would like to hear from descendants of any other children placed from Marion County in Buckners during that time period.

I am interested to know of any MARION COUNTY/early placements and activities with Buckner's orphange.
I know that the three youngest children of William James Fergusson (FERGUSON, FERGUSSON), the jailer who testified at the bail appeal hearing of Abe Rothschild in Tyler, were placed in Buckners after the death of W.J.'s wife(Augusta Catherina SLAYTON FERGGUSON, b. 8-29-1844 TX daughter of Sandford G. and Mary SLAYTON, d. Jan 19, 1881, Jefferson, TX) and J.W.'s death Feb. 1, 1885 in Jefferson.

Recently I have received the following information from a descendant of one of the Fergguson girls who was taken to Buckner's from Marion County. Effie's Bible contains the following entries. I have regrouped them so that births, deaths and marriages of an individual are together.

Am trying to learn more about the family of W.J. Fergguson.
I know that he married one of the younger daughters of Sanford G. SLAYTON. Sanford and wife Mary, came to Texas in the 1830s with the Tennessee migration. His mother LUCIE, a widow, also came at the same time. Both SANFORD AND LUCIE got headright landgrant from the Republic of Texas. The Slaytons lived up around Daingerfield I think. Much of the land from at least one of the head right landgrants is in Marion County. My father, James Harvey Chatham, JR. (son of Cora Mae FERGUSSON, one of the three daughters of W.J and Augusta Catherina SLAYTON FERGUSSON, who was placed in Buckners) was born and raised on part of that land. It is located near Lake Of the Pines. At different times the address has been given as Mims Chapel; other times as Avinger, TX.

I'll share or be thrilled to received information on any of the people mentioned in the BIBLE entries, history buffs specializing in the Diamond Bessie Trial, or those knowledgable about Texas Headright grants, expecially those to the Slayton family.
