What Co. was Giddings in prior to Lee Co.?

I hate to ask this rather basic question, but I have been unable to find the
answer myself.

What county was Giddings in prior to the formation of Lee Co. (1874)?
I have an ancestor who was allegedly born in Giddings, Lee Co., in 1865.
But, I know that the county didn't exist yet. So, was Giddings part
of Bastrop or Fayette counties at that time?
