Joan, you are right on!! I am in contact with the descendant of John R. Petty. Both of us believe John R. and Joseph A. Petty are brothers who married sisters. BUT so far we cannot prove it. John R. even traveled from GA to TN to join the same Unit in the Civil War. John R.'s wife died and he disappeared be fore 1880 census and cannot be located. Their children (most of them) went to live with Margarets sister in GA. I am working on Joseph A. because he seems to have lived the longest of all the children. I am descended from James K. who was born ca 1845 and died 1900 in I.T. You were right on the money with your assumptions.
