Just throwing out some ideas. On the 1870 census Logan Co, TN, your Joseph 23, b TN, and Nancy are on page 446, on page 447 is a John R. Petty, 34, b TN with wife Margaret and children, could he be a brother to your Joseph?

There is a Joseph in the household of John Petty 51, born in TN, in Bradley Co, TN in 1860 census that could fit your Joseph, and in the neighboring county of McMinn is J.R. Petty and Margaret. Would this indicate there is a tie here?

Now, on Rootsweb's WorldConnect site -- http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi -- I went looking and found somone working on the above John R. Petty and they show him as the son of John from above census. You might contact that submitter share what you know. Enter Petty, John born Tennessee, 1836 + or - five years, spouse Margaret.

Happy Hunting (^_^)
