I don't know if this helps, but this DC says father John born in GA. Born 1823 is pretty early for TX, I'm willing to bet John was born in GA. On census records James shows his father born in GA. He is the oldest child and should have known his father more than children born later.

On Rootsweb's WorldConnect site -- http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi -- there are several people working on this line. Be careful, some people just copy from others, but maybe someone can give you some sources for their information.
I entered Clark, James, born 1861 + or - five years, mother fowler and found some matches.
Happy Hunting (^_^)
